Mary Read was born in Devon County, England, in the late 17th century. She had a harsh childhood. Her father died before she was born and her half-brother Mark passed away soon afterward. Mary's paternal grandmother supported Mary and her mother, only because she thought that her grandson Mark was still alive. To keep death of Mary's brother a secret from his grandmother, Mary was raised as a boy, pretending to be her older brother.

When Mary was about thirteen years old, her grandmother died. Mary, still dressed as boy and with boyish habits, had to find a job. She became a footboy to wealthy French woman, who lived in London. Unsatisfied with her current position, she ran off and boarded a man-o-war. A few years passed and she became bored again. This time she joined army, where she met Tom Barrett. Tom and Mary were immediately drawn to one another, although Tom did not realize Mary’s true gender at first. Mary became protective of Tom in their friendship and, as she was the fiercer of the two, often stepped in when it looked like Tom was in danger. In one particular incident, Tom angered a fellow soldier who challenged him to a duel. Knowing that Tom could not possibly win, Mary went out of her way to annoy the same soldier who also challenged her to a duel. She set it for three hours before he was to fight Tom and, when the time came, she shot and killed the soldier, preventing Tom from his duel.

Eventually, Mary realized... )

Ask any of the chickies in my pen
They'll tell you I'm the biggest mother hen
I love them all and all of them love me
Because the system works, the system called reciprocity

Got a little motto
Always sees me through
When you're good to Mama
Mama's good to you
There's a lot of favors
I'm prepared to do
You do one for Mama
She'll do one for you

They say that life is tit for tat
And that's the way I live
So, I deserve a lot of tat
For what I've got to give

Don't you know that this hand
Washes that one, too?
When you're good to Mama
Mama's good to you
If you want my gravy
Pepper my ragù
Spice it up for Mama
She'll get hot for you

When they pass that basket
Folks contribute to
You put in for Mama
She'll put out for you

The folks atop the ladder
Are the ones the world adores
So boost me up my ladder, kid
And I'll boost you up yours

Let's all stroke together
Like the Princeton crew
When you're strokin' Mama
Mama's strokin' you
So what's the one conclusion
I can bring this number to?
When you're good to Mama
Mama's good to you (ah yeah)

The Ballad of the Bellwether Beast and Mary Read

Let's raise our glasses and sing of a beast of a strange new breed
Who battled pirate princess, the lovely Mary Read!
The two of them clashed in many an elaborate game
Earning nothing but the sorrow of immortal Name.

The Bellwether Beast in shadows thrived
Causing mortals to tremble in fear of their lives
And hearing of this, fair Mary could not resist
To challenge the Beast, to make Him desist.

From a dungeon prison She did flee,
By falsely pleading Her belly,
And off She went into the night,
Hot for vengeance, hot for an immortal fight.

The Beast was the horror of every mortal man,
Taking His prey silently, again and again.
A terror He was! And any man who saw
Him was soon caught up in His deadly maw.

The two of them clashed on city streets,
In poorest of ghetto, in neighborhoods most elite.
But never was victor truly declared
Until in this very city, the two of them squared.

Mary said, "I will return to the sea,
An Odysseus instead of a Nobody."
The Beast laughed and said, "The time has come!"
And under the pale moonlight, the battle begun.

The Beast lashed against the twirling mark
Whose pistols flashed silver in the dark.
And when the dust had settled on the ground
Mary Read was nowhere to be found.

The Beast slipped away into the night,
Wounds still bleeding from the immortal fight.
And some say a cry rose from the sea,
Whispering, "Welcome home, dear Mary."

You're one of a kind, I can't explain it.
You're kind of cool, in a wonderful way.
Though you're weird, you can make it.
And who better than me to teach you.
Who better then me to set you on your way.

This could take some hangin' in there
Though with persuasion I can take you on up
Make you grow up, beside the others
And who better than me to lead you
Who better than me to take you all the way

Struggling along for years and years
Until I came along for you
Now its all comin' together
And together will see this through
You for me and me for you

I can learn, I can listen
I know there's something
Deep inside but
I need assistance to go the distance

And who better than me
To teach me
Who better than me
To tell me all you know
Who better than me
You reach me
Who better than me
To show them all we know!

Mina's office was dark and cramped. There were no windows, of course, but enough light could get in from the humming florescents in the hallway. And the door was open an inch or two, which was all the light the three women needed. They stood in a tight circle; Mina leaning against the front of her desk, still wearing her gaudy pirate costume from the party, with her fedora; Rosa against the wall in her usual black dress and usual scowl; and Brie, the most beautiful of them, dressed as Joan of Arc, with her back to the door. Within their little circle was the chair.

From a distance, it looked rickety and old. One might even mistake it for something hastily assembled from wood. But the gleaming white rods of the chair were bone. Naked and exposed. And the women could feel power trembling from the chair. More than just power. Emotion. Fear. Which was only logical.

"What do we do now?" Rosa asked. It was easier for her to be businesslike about it. After all, she didn't know the poor man.

"He can't survive like that much longer," Mina said. She, by contrast, was struggling to remain businesslike. Although she had no special affection for Luke, there was an association that she couldn't ignore.

Poor Brie, unfortunately... )

Mina couldn’t decide which was more humiliating. The corset or the dress. Probably the corset. She understood the necessity of wearing a dress in certain circles, even if she didn’t much care for it. But the corset? What was the point? She was naturally thin to begin with and she, frankly, had no desire to parade her breasts around to everyone. But Anne had insisted and seeing as it was Jacqueline’s party, Mina finally relented. She would be on her best behavior tonight. But there would be no promises about tomorrow night.

It was several hours into the party and Mina had had quite enough inane chit chat with Jack and Anne’s guests. She loved the two of them, of course. And Jacqueline, beyond words. But some of the mortals they chose to associate with had some particularly peculiar ideas about life. And Mina was more or less done with it all. What’s more, she’d begun to notice something strange about Jack. Every time she happened to glance up from a conversation about how the South was ‘destined to rise again,’ she noticed him looking her way. He was always quick to avert his eyes, but his smile seemed to linger in her direction.

She didn't trust him... )

Mina is a V:TR vampire. As such, she has some powers. Some of them might do things to you. Take a look at her abilities below and post to let me know what is and isn't okay to do to your character. And remember, saying "Talk to me first" is a perfectly reasonable thing! I'm super nice and a squishy person.

Vampire Powers
Command: Mina can issue a one-word command that must be obeyed, provided she can make eye contact with her victim and provided that the victim can follow this command with reasonable self-preservation. Should the command be something akin to "sleep" then the victim will immediately wake upon any kind of attack.

Mesmerize: Mina can implant a suggestion or false thought. She can give the victim a specific order to follow which lasts until the task is completed or until the end of the month.

The Forgetful Mind: Mina can doctor a subject's memories. She pacifies the subject and can search for memories in the subconscious. As the subject recites the memory aloud, she can alter it, erase it, or implant new memories verbally.

Rigor Mortis: A Cruac ritual, this ability allows Mina to freeze the muscles of an enemy for a short period of time, making it difficult for them to move. It is much more effective on supernatural creatures than regular mortals.

Path of Thorns: Yet another Cruac ritual, this spell allows Mina to transform the ground around her into a lethal jumble of briar.

Hawthorn Barrier: A ritual similar to Path of Thorns, this bit of Cruac allows her to create a wall of hawthorn that is difficult to penetrate.

Feeding
Well, naturally, a vampire needs to drink blood. Mina is not the sort of person who drains a human dry. That's an enormous waste. In general, she takes about three pints per feeding. And here's the bonus: Being bitten by a V:TR vampire totally feels like a sexual experience. That's right. You'll enjoy being bitten.

Anyway, normally, Mina will just dominate someone to forget that she bit them, but if anyone's willing to donate blood, she's on board with that. Tell me how you feel about that!

“I want to be a vampire!” Jacqueline screamed, stamping her foot down on the floor.

“Jacqueline!” her father said, reaching out for her hand. “Please, you’ll ruin your new shoes.”

“I don’t care about my shoes,” Jacqueline said, folding her arms petulantly, turning to glare at her mother.

“The guests will be arriving shortly,” her mother said, crossing the room and making a big fuss of looking out the window. There was nobody there, of course. She just wanted to avoid looking at Jacqueline. And Jacqueline knew it. She was an expert at her mother’s little ticks and tricks.

“I’m tired of waiting,” Jacqueline said, walking straight up to her mother. “Today is my sixteenth birthday and I want to get my wish.”

“Anne,” Jacqueline’s father said pleadingly, looking at his wife. “Please talk some sense into the child.”

Jacqueline's mother turned... )

Here's to the ladies who lunch--
Everybody laugh.
Lounging in their caftans
And planning a brunch
On their own behalf.
Off to the gym,
Then to a fitting,
Claiming they're fat.
And looking grim,
'Cause they've been sitting
Choosing a hat.
Does anyone still wear a hat?
I'll drink to that.

And here's to the girls who play smart--
Aren't they a gas?
Rushing to their classes
In optical art,
Wishing it would pass.
Another long exhausting day,
Another thousand dollars,
A matinee, a Pinter play,
Perhaps a piece of Mahler's.
I'll drink to that.
And one for Mahler!

And here's to the girls who play wife--
Aren't they too much?
Keeping house but clutching
A copy of LIFE,
Just to keep in touch.
The ones who follow the rules,
And meet themselves at the schools,
Too busy to know that they're fools.
Aren't they a gem?
I'll drink to them!
Let's all drink to them!

And here's to the girls who just watch--
Aren't they the best?
When they get depressed,
It's a bottle of Scotch,
Plus a little jest.
Another chance to disapprove,
Another brilliant zinger,
Another reason not to move,
Another vodka stinger.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!
I'll drink to that.

So here's to the girls on the go--
Everybody tries.
Look into their eyes,
And you'll see what they know:
Everybody dies.
A toast to that invincible bunch,
The dinosaurs surviving the crunch.
Let's hear it for the ladies who lunch--
Everybody rise!
Rise!
Rise! Rise! Rise! Rise! Rise! Rise! Rise!
Rise!

Port Royale’s prisons were not known for their accommodations, but there was one saving grace; they were underground. Underground meant out of the sunlight, which meant that all she had to do was throw a blanket over Anne during the day and no one would ever be the wiser. At night, Anne would wake as though alive and protect her while she slept. The problem was dusk, when there was no one to protect her and she was really, very tired.

She knew something was wrong when she heard the crisp smack of boots on the stone floor. Rising to her feet, she walked over to the bars of their cell, glancing into the corridor. There was Rogers, swaggering in the direction of their cell door. Quickly, she stepped away from the bars, but Rogers scarcely seemed to notice. He paused by the hot fire in the middle of the corridor, between the rows of cells, twirling a branding iron like a sword. “And where is our Anne?” he asked.

“Asleep,” she replied. “She’s tired.”

You found hope, you found faith.
Found how fast she could take it away.
Found true love, but lost your heart.
Now you don't know who you are.

She made it easy, made it free.
Made you hurt till you couldn't see.
Sometimes it stops, sometimes it flows.
But baby, that is how love goes.

You will fly and you will crawl.
God knows even angels fall.
No such thing as you've lost it all.
God knows even angels fall.

It's a secret, that no one tells.
One day it's heaven one day it's hell.
And it's no fairy tale, take it from me.
That's the way it's supposed to be.

You will fly and you will crawl.
God knows even angels fall.
No such thing as you've lost it all.
God knows even angels fall.

You laugh, you cry, no one knows why,
But oh, the thrill of it all.
You're on the ride,
You might as well, open your eyes.

You will fly and you will crawl.
God knows even angels fall.
No such thing as you've lost it all.
God knows even angels fall.
Even angels fall.
Even angels fall.

When I think of Tom.
I think about a night.
When the earth smelled of summer
And the sky was streaked with white,
And the soft mist of England
Was sleeping on a hill-
I remember this,
And I always will...

There are new lovers now
On that same silent hill,
Looking on the same blue sea,
And I know Tom and I are a part of them all,
And they're all a part of Tom an me.

Hello young lovers, whoever you are,
I hope your troubles are few.
All my good wishes go with you tonight,
I've been in love like you.

Be brave, young lovers, and follow your star,
Be brave and faithful and true,
Cling very close to each other tonight-
I've been in love like you.

I know how it feels to have wings on your heels,
And to fly down the street in a trance.
You fly down a street on the chance that you meet,
And you meet-not really by chance.

Don't cry young lovers, whatever you do,
Don't cry because I'm alone;
All of my memories are happy tonight,
I've had a love of my own,
I've had a love of my own, like yours-
I've had a love of my own.

Sailing

I'd rather be sailing, yes, I would
On an open sea
I'd stand at the railing if I could
Feeling wild and free

The sun is on my neck, the wind is in my face
The water's incredibly blue
And I'd rather be sailing
Yes, I'd wanna go sail
And then come home to you

Sex is good but I'd rather be sailing
Food is nice but I'd rather be sailing
People are swell but I'd rather be sailing
Over the horizon

And I'd rather be sailing, yes, I would
On an open sea
I'd stand there inhaling if I could
Feeling wild and free

The sun is on my neck, the wind is in my face
The sea is incredibly blue
And I'd rather be sailing
Yes, I'd wanna go sail
And then come home to you

I'd rather be sailing
Yes, I'd wanna go sail
And then come home to you
